Wage and Hour Division Administration of Special Minimum Wages for Workers with Disabilities

The Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor conducted an audit of the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) under the Fair Labor Standards Act (Act), which includes a provision for a special minimum wage (SMW) for workers with disabilities. Section 14 of the Act authorizes WHID to certify employers to pay workers with disabilities (workers) the special minimum wage (SMW).

The Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor was concerned that workers with disabilities are not receiving the correct minimum wage. The OIG conducted an audit and has made recommendations. The audit was released in March 2001 (Report No. 05-01-002-04-420, March 19, 2001).
