AAPD Congressional Internship Program for College Students with Disabilities

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), a national membership organization dedicated to promoting the economic and political empowerment of all people with disabilities, is pleased to announce a grant from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) to establish a summer congressional internship program for college students with disabilities. The AAPD Congressional Internship Program will provide an opportunity for students with disabilities to work on Capitol Hill and acquire valuable work experience that will enrich their academic studies. Interns will gain insight into Congressional office operations, how public policy is developed, and the roles of the various constituencies in the legislative/political process. AAPD invites Washington, DC Metro Area undergraduate students with disabilities to apply for this program.

The AAPD Congressional Internship Program is designed to:

  • Allow students with disabilities to obtain first-hand knowledge of the legislative and political process through working in a Congressional office and participating in a series of seminars sponsored by AAPD and The Washington Center

  • Enable students with disabilities to acquire valuable work experience that will enhance their academic studies and career prospects

  • Demonstrate to Members of Congress, staff, and other interns the talents that students with disabilities can bring to a professional work environment

  • Introduce students to members of the Washington disability policy community and national disability leaders through a series of seminars and special events such as the anniversary observance of passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Here’s How It Works:

  • Undergraduate students who are 2nd semester sophomores through 1st semester seniors studying at a DC Metro Area College or University must complete an official application. Applications can be obtained by calling AAPD at 202-457-0046 or online at www.aapd-dc.org. Applications may be submitted either electronically or via U.S. Postal Service.   • AAPD will review all of the applications and a group of finalists will be selected for personal interviews.

  • Students ultimately selected for the congressional internships will begin their 8-week internships with an orientation in late-May or early-June of each year.

  • Students will receive a $1,200.00 stipend while participating in the internships.

  • Students will work with congressional office staff to select a significant technology policy issue and develop a briefing book.

  • Academic credit may be arranged (students must initiate this).
