Special Needs Opportunity Windows

From the April 2002 FCTD newsletter:

The SNOW Project (Special Needs Opportunity Windows), a provider of online resources and professional development opportunities for educators and parents of students with disabilities is hosted and administered by the Adaptive Technology Resource Centre, University of Toronto. This Project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education through the Provincial Schools Branch.

The project has an excellent Web site which includes information about products, online workshops, curriculum materials. Below is a description of the resources the SNOW Project offers.

Adaptive Technology Products

The Web site provides information about computer based products for people with disabilities. Categories of information include augmentative communication devices, screen magnification, text to speech, personal data assistants, voice output and voice recognition. This provides descriptions of equipment, frequently asked questions, links to vendors, and resources.

Technology FAQ's

This question and answer format is a resource to turn to to find information about a product or locate a page for troubleshooting (if one is available from the developer or manufacturer of the product). It clearly provides information about the link to the product.

Tutorials

A collection of free, online, commercially available tutorials and product certification programs is provided on this Web site. Most of the resources are free and those that are not provide information about their fee. Also, some of the items are software programs that can be used as teaching and learning tools.

Categories include alternative keyboards, alternative mouse devices, braille embossers, optical character recognition, portable data assistants, screen magnification, screen reading, voice predicition and word prediction.
