Talking to Kids About Disabilities
-
UCP Michigan gets calls from parents and teachers of children with disabilities looking for resources to help teach the children’s classmates about disabilities.
Two books that seem to understand that “We’re More Alike Than Different” are Fred Rogers’ Let’s Talk About It: Extraordinary Friends, and Maria Shriver’s What’s Wrong With Timmy?. Both books address the fear of the unknown that non-disabled students may have when first meeting a new friend with a disability, and both encourage getting to know each other and celebrating individuality.
Extraordinary Friends is more suited to pre-schoolers and has many photos of children with and without disabilities playing together. What’s Wrong With Timmy? is for ages 5-8 and addresses questions in more depth.
Let’s Talk About It: Extraordinary Friends, Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, 2000, $6.99.
What’s Wrong With Timmy?, Little Brown Children’s Books, 2001, $14.95.
