Take Up Thy Bed and Walk
-
This book examines the often-toxic messages about disability in still-popular classic literature such as Heidi, The Secret Garden, Pollyanna, Jane Eyre, Little Women, and Little House on the Prairie. Disability is portrayed as punishment for wrong-doing, as something that can be cured by willpower, or as a fate worse than death.
The author asks us to reconsider the message these stories send to young readers. Next time a youth we know is reading one of these classics, a perfect opportunity may present itself for discussion of attitudes toward disability....
Take Up Thy Bed and Walk: Death, Disability, and Cure in Classic Fiction for Girls, by Lois Keith, Taylor & Francis, Inc., 2001, $22.95.
