Living in a State of Stuck

    Assistive Technology can radically change the life of someone with cerebral palsy. A power chair can help a person be independently mobile for the first time. Similarly, a communication device can allow someone with a speech difficulty to reach out to another person and be heard and understood.

    For those of you looking for a vivid and personal description of how assistive technology can impact a person’s life, Living in a State of Stuck: How Assistive Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities, by Marcia Scherer, provides an interesting and honest perspective on the effects of using assistive technology.

    The third edition profiles people with a variety of disabilities, including several people with cerebral palsy, over a period of 14 years. The author examines the needs of each individual and how assistive technology, along with other services, supports, and relationships, meets those needs. She also describes when and why the use of an assistive technology device fails, and when it succeeds. The most useful tools in the book are the Checklists for Assistive Technology Evaluation and Selection at the end of the book.
