The Family Support Advisory Council of United Cerebral Palsy of Pennsylvania announces the selection of three grantees to provide a 15-month Demonstration Project that will show how family-driven services and supports can be effective across the full range of disabilities and ages. The Department of Public Welfare has made available $250,000 from the 2002 Real Choice Systems Change Grant for use in these Projects.
The Family Support Advisory Council developed an Request for Proposal based on the Family Support Act (Act 198 of 2004) and reviewed 18 responses. The Project held a kick-off event on June 29, 2006 and will conclude on September 30, 2007. Council members will assist in the ongoing oversight of the Project and are available for support or assistance to the grantees, as needed.

The grantees will use a family-friendly approach for the intake process, the forms used in the Project, and for the methods available for families to get the items or services described in their Family Service Plan. The Plans are developed by families to meet needs identified in the intake process.
One focus of the Project is to reach out to and serve families that are not able to access the existing service system for various reasons, e.g. eligibility criteria, age, waiting lists. A feature of the Family Support Demonstration Project includes the flexibility to get items or services not available through traditional programs. In addition, the Plan may benefit the entire family or just the individual with the disability, as decided by the family.
