Most children enjoy arts and crafts projects, and the children of UCP are no different! Through grants from VSA Arts of Alabama, Jurenko, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, UCP clients and their siblings participate in free art workshops taught by local artist S. Renee’ Prasil.
These workshops, or “ArtStops,” take place bi-weeky at the UCP Therapy Center. Young clients look forward to make-and-take projects using different media, including torn paper animals, flower paintings and clay bowls.
ArtStops hold great value for the children and their families. Children are given opportunities to express their creativity and learn about textures, colors and shapes. This activity helps develop their fine motor and language skills in a fun environment.
As one child said, “It’s not boring here like at other offices. We get to do art!” Parents can choose to have a break while their children are in ArtStops, a much-needed respite for many of them. Some choose to stay and participate in art projects with their children, forming family bonds and a greater connection with UCP.
Art Stops are held every second and fourth Thursday from 2:30-4 p.m. in the UCP classroom. Clients and their siblings ages 3 and up are encouraged to particpate.
