Here, program participants are offered a wide variety of activities which encourage a desire to learn. Many of our consumers have either attended a local high school’s special education department or Helen Davis State School. Most have learned a great deal of useful skills over the years, and we work hard on helping each participant either increase, or, at the very least maintain, the educational skills they have mastered. The old adage is most definitely true…Use it or lose it!
On any given day, you can find consumers practicing writing checks, telling time, learning common community signs, learning telephone manners, and recognizing the value of coins and bills. Many educational bingo games are used to teach. Besides the traditional number bingo, we play letter, color/shape, sight words, sound, road sign, and consumer rights bingo. (By the way, we stock a prize closet to motivate individuals to complete a game. If you’d ever want to donate odds and ends, cd’s, stuffed animals, house decorations, sports pictures, etc. we would sure appreciate it!)
We strive for a peaceful atmosphere for learning, but also enjoy times of joy and fun! We have learned that when we find creative ways to make learning enjoyable, we see much more success! There is nothing more rewarding than being a part of helping consumers become more independent and watching that “light of knowledge” come into their eyes!
