Here at UCP, we believe that belonging to the community in which you live means much more that just living there. It means being involved in the activities and events that interest you and giving back to that community through volunteerism. UCP’s Adult Program community integration activities provide program participants the opportunity to belong to their community through participation in a wide variety of recreational and volunteer activities.
Every day, program participants of the Adult Program can be found volunteering all over the St. Joseph community. The following are a few of the ways they give back to their community daily:
- Meals on Wheels: Each day program participants deliver meals through this program to the elderly and other St. Joseph residents who cannot cook meals for themselves.
- Arbor View Nursing Home: UCP’s Adult Program has formed a partnership with the wonderful residents of Arbor View Nursing Home. Program participants join in recreational activities with the residents such as bowling, horse racing, and armchair basketball!
- Second Harvest Food Bank: Program participants help with mailings for the Food Bank. These mailings are fairly extensive, with program participants being responsible for folding, stuffing, sealing, and labeling each envelop before they are mailed out to thousands of St. Joseph residents.
- St. Francis/ King Hill Apartments: Many apartment residents are unable to take their recyclable materials to the recycling center. A group of UCP participants pick up residents' recyclable materials and deliver them to the recycling center, allowing more residents to participate in improving our environment through recycling.
- St. Joseph Public School District: Program participants help area teachers by sorting, organizing, and bundling donations given to the District’s Crayon to Computers Program.
In addition to volunteering, program participants also take part in a variety of community events, recreational activities, and other activities designed to help them stay physically active, learn new skills, and develop meaningful relationships.
