What is a Vocational Assessment?
The purpose of a vocational assessment is to determine the individual’s skills and how they might benefit from vocational training. The following areas are covered in the assessment:
- Functional Application of Basic Skills- (i.e. transportation, communication maturity, job interest, etc.).
- Academics Skills- This group of tests help the SEP staff learn about the individual’s skills in the areas of math, reading, writing, money management, time and measurements.
- Gross and Fine Motor Skills- This area assesses skills such as hand strength, coordination, as well as the individual’s ability to stand for long periods of time and to lift and carry.
- Social Skills- Does the individual possess skills that will help him/her get along with co-workers while on the job and in training?
- Self Help- The individual is evaluated on performance of certain independent skills, such as attending to personal hygiene, using vending machines, crossing streets, telling time, and handling money.
- Job Site Evaluation- The individual is taken to a variety of job sites to help him/her make an informed choice about the kind of job desired and to learn if he/she has the skills necessary to be successful at that job. The individual is not paid for work completed during the evaluation.
- Job Readiness and Job Knowledge- The individual will fill out job applications and practice interviewing for a job. Safety practices on the job will also be considered.
Who is eligible for a Vocational Assessment?
Any individual identified by the referral agencies (Vocational Rehabilitation, schools, etc.) as having a developmental disability and as needing help to determine employable skills is eligible for assessment through the Supported Employment Program.
How long is the Vocational Assessment?
If a comprehensive assessment is recommended, it will be necessary for the individual to complete an evaluation period which may last anywhere from 30 hours to approximately 4 weeks.
After the Vocational Assessment
After the assessment is completed, a Personal Plan meeting will be held that includes the individual, parent or guardian, a referral representative, UCP staff, along with any others the individual would like to attend. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the results of the assessment and the recommendation of the team.
If the team recommends employment, Job Development services are provided. If, however, after the assessment staff and the referring agency determine the individual needs to work on attaining or improve work related skills, he/she may be referred to an alternate program.
