NMHI Shelter Plus Care Program

The Shelter Plus Care Program is designed to assist homeless mentally ill individuals achieve a more satisfying and secure life through locating permanent housing and continued support through life skills coaches and mental health services.

UCP of Northern Nevada’s participation in this program allows individuals to be referred to us through the Nevada Mental Health Institute (NMHI). We are able to further assist the individual in locating appropriate housing using grant/HUD guidelines. Shelter Plus Care HUD guidelines vary from standard HUD guidelines, as under the Shelter Plus Care guidelines, and under the Shelter Plus Care grant, landlords may receive first and last months rent. They may also receive up to one months rent in addition, if the individual should vacate and leaved the apartment unclean or damaged.

After housing is located (which can sometimes take up to 3-4 weeks), the individual is moved in and begins his or her appropriate treatment plan. UCP will provide case management and community training services as deemed appropriate by NMHI and through consult with the individual.
