Access AmeriCorps
Program Accessibility and Inclusion
An AmeriCorps program could be based in a completely inaccessible structure, and still be inclusive, enabling all of its members to participate equally in all the program offers. An AmeriCorps program could also be structurally accessible and provide accommodations but still not succeed in including members with disabilities. Establishing an accessible and inclusive environment is an on-going and evolving process. Accessibility should be evaluated periodically, consistently striving for higher levels of inclusion of individuals with disabilities.
Examples of Site Accessibility
• architectural accessibility
• clear paths of travel
• accessible parking
• signs directing individuals to accessible entrances, restrooms, lifts, etc.
• door handles reachable by wheelchair user and operable with closed fists
• Braille signs for room numbers, restrooms, nameplates, etc.
• water fountains reachable by wheelchair user and operable with closed fists
• telephones hearing aid compatible and have volume control
Examples of Program Accessibility
• recruitment materials reflect a commitment to inclusion by showing images of people with disabilities and welcoming language
• provide materials in alternate formats (Braille, large print, text on disks, etc.)
• communication access (TTY, sign language interpreters, captioned videotapes, etc.)
• consider accessibility when service and social events are held off site
• disability awareness trainings for members and staff
• have established mechanism for applicants/members to request accommodations
• established emergency evacuation procedure addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities
Examples of Actions that Lead to Inclusion
• proactive recruitment and retention of members with disabilities
• service environment with open and clear communication
• re-evaluate accommodations periodically with member to ensure they are still successful
• records with documentation of disability kept in a separate and locked file
