TANF
TANF Expected To See Fast Action in the House
For a more in-depth discussion of TANF and people with disabilities, see the March 11, 2002, edition of Washington Watch. The House Republican Leadership plans to move quickly on reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Act. They anticipate offering level funding of the program at $16.5 billion annually, as well as require greater numbers of recipients to work and to work for longer hours. Mark-up is expected in the Ways and Means Committee in April and floor action in May. House Democrats have introduced H.R. 3625, by Rep. Ben Cardin (D-MD), which would increase spending to $25 billion and maintain the current work requirements over the next five years. H.R. 3113 has been introduced by Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI).
On March 21, 2002, Senator Rockefeller S. 2052 and Senators Lincoln, Breaux and Rockefeller introduced S. 2058 on the same day. The Senate Finance Committee is expected to hold several subcommittee hearings chaired by Sen. John Breaux (D-LA) and at least one full committee hearing chaired by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT). They hope to complete these hearings by late spring and move to a mark-up in early summer. Chairman Baucus and Ranking Minority Charles Grassley (R-IA) hope to introduce a bipartisan bill. See the details of these or other bills on Thomas.
