Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Computer Lab from Microsoft (1/19/07)

Daytona Beach, FL – January 2, 2007 - UCP of East Central Florida/WORC will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new computer lab on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive in Daytona Beach, FL. Senator Evelyn J. Lynn will do the honors of cutting the ribbon, while supporters of the project, including Microsoft, Daytona Beach Community College, Media Tech, Publix Supermarket Charities and Junior League will be present to mark the occasion of the newly completed lab.

In July 2006, Microsoft presented UCP of East Central Florida /WORC with a grant for more than $95,000 in cash and software. Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program focuses on increasing access to underserved communities. “With the support of Microsoft, our interactive technology center will address the increasingly poignant need to narrow the technology gap that persists in the disability community,” said Barry Pollack, president and CEO of UCP/WORC.

The new computer lab consists of advanced technology, including Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant workstations, voice recognition software and reading magnifiers. The lab includes 10 workstations, two of which can be elevated or lowered to accommodate wheelchairs. With the aid of instructors from DBCC, the center will focus on basic computer training and preparing individuals with disabilities for employment and job placement according to their individualized career interests. “Utilizing the benefits of technology, the grant will help increase our clients’ independence and enhance the quality of their lives,” said Pollack.
