Important Housing Information Vouchers for Homeownership In 11 States

A HUD press release discusses two separate initiatives: 1) a Section 8 Homeownership Demonstration project (regulations published in the Federal Register on June 22, 2002), and 2) the availability of 400 vouchers in your states for rental assistance hooked up to Medicaid funded services and supports.

The Homeownership Demo uses vouchers for down payment assistance and this program is targeted to individuals with disabilities who have higher incomes. (“Disabled families with incomes up to 99% of the area median”; “a family must have an annual household income of at least $10,000.”)

The 400 vouchers in Project Access are for rental and they are being distributed in partnership with HHS. HUD supplies vouchers and promises technical assistance but HHS, through state Medicaid agencies, will use Nursing Home Transition Grants or other Medicaid funds to help people make the transition from institutional settings to the community.

Contact the identified housing authority or housing finance agency in your state to express your interest in these vouchers. You may also be interested in viewing the guidebook Section 8 Made Simple: Using the Housing Choice Voucher Program to Assist People with Disabilities.
