UCP Challenges Local Companies to get Casual this May!

This year UCP is turning one day of dressing down into a month of awareness and activities for all ages.

Memphis, Tenn. - In years past, United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) has hosted “Casual Day” in which area businesses support UCP by making donations in exchange for wearing casual attire in the workplace. This year UCP is turning one day of dressing down into a month of awareness and activities for all ages. Casual May- Don’t Dis my Ability will focus attention on disability awareness and education through events and programs at schools and businesses for the entire month of May. During UCP presentations, participants will be invited to spend a minute taking part in disability-like experiences in an effort to increase the public’s understanding of the challenges faced by many in our community. Those who participate in the Don’t Dis my Ability activities are not only eligible to win prizes but they are also invited to visit the UCP website to share their experiences for a UCP publication set to be released at the end of this year.

Last year, 60 Memphis-area businesses and organizations participated to raise essential funds for UCP’s programs and services, like Camp Livitup, the only eight-week all access summer camp, and Magic Moments, a therapeutic dance program. In addition, the support from Casual May companies helps adults with disabilities gain career training and life skills education through UCP’s Adult Care Enrichment Program, and families have access to equipment that they are not able to afford through UCP’s Durable Medical Equipment Program. This year UCP is hoping to recruit more companies and continue the effort of bringing disability awareness to the forefront in the Mid-South community. FedEx, Lipcomb Pitts Insurance, and Cummins Mid-South are just some of the companies scheduled to participate.
