Taste of Madison 2011
Taste of Madison VolunteersDespite the rainy and windy weather, thousands of people came out to attend Taste of Madison over Labor Day weekend this year. An estimated 200,000 attendees enjoyed the local food, beverages and entertainment. Nearly 800 individuals volunteered on behalf of UCP serving beverages at 22 stands around the Capitol Square.

Taste of Madison VolunteersSpirits ran high amongst volunteers throughout the weekend, contributing to an incredible amount of tips collected. An amazing $64,000 in funds was raised for UCP’s programs and services. As tips were received, volunteers could be seen cheering, ringing cow bells, singing and dancing in their stands.

Taste of Madison VolunteersFor 29 years, UCP has partnered with Taste of Madison to serve beverages at the event. The time, energy and dedication put forth by volunteers help UCP to serve over 1,400 children, adults, and families in our community each year. We are truly grateful for each and every one of our volunteers, thank you for your support.

Taste of Madison VolunteersUCP would like to thank the Madison area Kohl’s stores for their community support during Taste of Madison. Their Associates in Action team members, representing all three Madison Kohl’s stores, volunteered at several booths throughout the weekend.

We love helping the local charities in our community and Taste of Madison is great way to support UCP. We have a blast and plan on volunteering for years to come!
-Catherine Ziggler, Kohl’s West

This was our first year volunteering at Taste of Madison and we had such a wonderful time. We can’t wait to do it again next year! What a great way to be hands on with UCP.

UCP of Greater Dane County: Proud CHCWI Member

We are a proud member of Community Health Charities of Wisconsin (CHCWI), a federation of health charities. Through our membership, UCP of Greater Dane County is included in both public and private workplace giving campaigns that reach over 400,000 employees throughout Wisconsin. Workplace giving campaigns allow employees to contribute from their paychecks through payroll deductions that enable a desired gift to be contributed each pay period. These campaigns provide employees the opportunity to specifically choose UCP as the recipient of their contribution.

CHCWI represents 44 Wisconsin health agencies and is looking for opportunities to open new workplace campaigns in order to increase the amount of funds made available to its members. You may be able to help CHCWI grow. If you have an employee giving program, please consider giving your support.

UCPeople: Touching Lives

UCP believes that all children can thrive in environments with their peers and offers a dedicated summer program to support families caring for teens with disabilities.

Youth ResourcesIn August, Caroline Miller, a UCP Service Coordinator (Case Manager) accompanied a new teen with special needs, Sam (name changed to protect privacy), to Devil’s Lake for a group day of swimming and spending time on the North Shore beach.

Sam chose to go canoeing and really enjoyed being on the water. At one point while out on the lake, Sam looked over toward a group of his peers who were swimming closer to the shore. He pointed to them and said, “Those are my friends. Let’s go over by my friends.” Sam really opened up and connected with his peers during this outing more than he had ever before. Between canoeing, swimming and playing on the beach, it was apparent that this group activity day was a wonderful opportunity for all.

It was a privilege to be a part of such a community, where differences are overshadowed by friendship and the common goal of all is to enjoy the beautiful summer together in the community.
-Caroline Miller, UCP Service Coordinator

Youth ResourcesMy son has personally benefitted from the outstanding and compassionate UCP staff that have availed him the opportunity to engage with others in the community, to develop meaningful relationships outside his immediate family, and to participate in a wide range of activities.
-Family Served by UCP’s Youth Resources

In late July, Shannon Molepske, a UCP Service Coordinator (Case Manager) along with several teens from the summer program and their facilitators ventured out to Elver Park for a game of kickball. They had to convince the teens it would be fun to run around in the heat, but once they got out in the field, all you could hear was laughter! The game ended up being a free-for-all with teens running to whatever base they wished and facilitators trying to guide them, but having a hard time doing so as everyone was laughing so hard!

UCP’s Teen Program is really a ‘team’ program, the kids and facilitators all know each other and help each other out. Although there are always challenges, I feel confident in our kids and staff that things will get worked out and we will continue to have fun.
-Shannon Molepske, UCP Service Coordinator

You Can Make a Difference

When you give to United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County, 90% of all funds raised are allocated to UCP programs. Here are some ways your donation can make a difference to those living with disabilities:

$15 can provide an hour of respite care, or much needed caregiver relief, for a grandparent who is raising her grandchild who has special needs.

$100 would support four hours of early intervention or therapy services for a young child with a speech delay.

$500 would pay for a month of UCP after school services for a teenager with autism.

With $2,400 we would be able to provide four months of transition and direct support for an adult who has experienced a traumatic brain injury.

Please take a few minutes and consider how you can make a difference. To donate, please contact Trisha Davies, Director of Development, at (608) 237-8508 or trishadavies@ucpdane.org.
