UCP of East Central Florida Holds Recognition Event
Daytona Beach, FL (March 14, 2011) – Wednesday, March 23, is Disabilities Awareness Day. UCP of East Central Florida will mark the occasion with an event open to the community from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UCP, 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive, Daytona Beach.
Members of the community are invited to join UCP of East Central Florida in honoring individuals with disabilities at the event sponsored in part by Daytona Ale House. There will be food, entertaiment and information on advocacy.
UCP President Craig Byrd says the event is an opportunity to remind Florida legislators of the importance of funding programs for individuals with disabilities and to educate taxpayers of the benefits of funding these programs. It costs Florida taxpayers roughly $135,000 per year to support one individual in an institution but only about $35,000 to train and support an individual to work and live in the community, services provided by UCP.
UCP has placed over 54,000 individuals in competitive employment and education training programs leading to a career in industries such as manufacturing, retail, nursing and rehabilitation.
UCP of East Central Florida has provided services to youth and adults with disabilities since 1969. UCP provides vocational training, support services, youth employment services and supported living services to over 850 individuals each year in Volusia, Flagler and surrounding counties. For information, contact UCP, 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive, Daytona Beach, (386) 274-6474 or visit online at www.ucpecf.org.
