Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood was the gust speaker at UCP of East Central Florida’s Transitional Employment Class Graduation on June 16, 2009. Chitwood gave a spirited and uplifting address to the class and engaged many of the participants in conversation by asking them what kind of job they wanted to have, offering them advice to continue to work hard and to follow their dreams of becoming employed.
Nine adults with disabilities graduated from the Transitional Employment Class at UCP. Some of these individuals already have jobs in the community at businesses such as Kmart, the Daytona International Speedway and McDonalds while others continue to seek employment and will continue to work in the training program at UCP.
UCP’s Transitional Employment Class includes classroom instruction and community employment exploration. Debbie Wilson, Transitional Employment Training Specialist, said those enrolled in the class interview with employers and community based instruction sites where participants get practical experience to try jobs similar to what others would do in a college internship.
UCP of East Central Florida has a training facility for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities located at 1100 Jimmy Ann Dr in Daytona Beach. Throughout the year, UCP contracts with a variety of companies for special projects which include assembling, disassembling, collating, sorting, and preparing mailers. These jobs are completed by individuals who participate in UCP’s Adult Day Training program.
UCP of East Central Florida serves more than 850 individuals with both physical and developmental disabilities in Volusia, Flagler, St Johns, Putnam, Lake and Marion counties.
