United Cerebral Palsy Proudly Announces
The 3rd Annual Ultimate Holiday Gift Program
To hear Barry Gardin, Board President of United Cerebral Palsy of the Golden Gate talk about his passion for
the 3rd Annual Ultimate Holiday Gift Program, is to be compelled to join him in giving that ultimate gift. “It
is a tall order, but this holiday season UCP intends to give an adaptive toy to every Bay Area child with a disability,
who wants and needs one,” said Gardin. We have grown from 90 children, to 130 and this year—we
hope to put smiles on everyone’s face!”
Finding the right toy for a child with a disability can be almost overwhelming. A mother of a five-year old
with cerebral palsy recently told us, “It is difficult finding toys for my son that he can play with that are right
for his age.” Many of the toys used by children with disabilities are designed for infants and toddlers. There
are toys designed specially for children with disabilities, but they can be very expensive. An adaptive bicycle
can cost several thousand dollars, which is far too much for most families.
UCP hopes to make the holiday brighter for children with disabilities and has generously committed more
than $10,000 to purchase gift certificates from “Abilitations” and other adaptive toy partners for children with
disabilities in the Bay Area. “We are hosting a very special holiday party for the children and their families”,
said Mary Jo Bernardo, executive director of UCPGG. “The donors of the Bay Area have truly come together
to make this a grand day complete with Santa, elves, toys for brothers and sisters, arts and crafts activities,
education about assistive technology, entertainment and of course lots of fun!”
