UCP Launches New Children’s Recreational Program

UCP is responding to parent’s needs! We heard the requests from parents of young children with CP and other motor impairments. Generally if children can’t run around and aren’t into sports, there are few weekend programs. Facing a lack of social and recreational prospects on weekends, many parents are looking for something else. This need was the force behind United Cerebral Palsy of the Golden Gate’s newest service. Available on two Saturdays per month, in San Francisco and in Oakland, UCP provides “Kid’s Club” a two-hour fun, educational, and therapeutic experience. In partnership with ZEUM, located at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, and the YWCA in Oakland, UCPGG hosts children in an inclusive program designed to entertain and engage children age 5 to 12 years old. Launched in October the first Kid’s Club featured Njoroge C. Tho- Biaz, music therapist and faculty member at the Community Music Center who provided a hands-on instrumental music program. In the future, we hope to introduce this program in Marin and Contra Costa for children and parents in every community we serve.” said Mary Jo Bernardo, Executive Director at UCPGG. “We also plan to bring this to our funding partners and seek inclusive opportunities with local recreation providers.” A fee of $5 per child is asked of all families, but no one is turned away because of inability to pay. All children are welcomed and reservations are necessary. Check the UCP website for the latest calendar of events or call us at 510-832-7430 to ask questions and make a reservation.
