Opens new Transition Employment Center
Pensacola – United Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Florida held an open house on Thursday, November 15, 2007, at the newly renovated Transition Employment Center (TEC) located at 2600 W. Fairfield Drive in Pensacola.
The Transition Employment Center houses program services for high school students and adults with disabilities. The programs include School to Work Transition, Supported Employment, and Supported Independent Living.
The School to Work Transition initiative is a systematic approach to education that links students with disabilities, schools, and work places. The program prepares students for the career of their choice. The students learn computer and job skills training through projects such as creating newsletters, brochures, building resumes, and accessing the Internet. Primarily focused on serving school-aged students the program transitions them out of the high school environment into the work arena. Skills learned assist individuals in conducting successful job searches, promoting creativity, independent thinking, and a strong sense of accomplishment.
Supported Employment is similar to the School to Work program, but is designed to employ adults who, until recently, have not been considered employable. The program finds the proper job match for people so they will be both satisfied and productive in their employment. Individuals in this program work with a job developer to develop the skills determined necessary in their field of interest and then help them pursue employment.
Our Supported Independent Living (SIL) program also has offices at the TEC. Persons in the SIL program live independently in their own home or apartment. Coaches teach them daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, banking, safety, etc.
The employment programs and independent living programs work hand-in-hand to assist people with developmental disabilities to acquire the skills to find employment and learn to live on their own with minimal assistance.
