UCP of Georgia’s New Hero!

Early on the morning of Sunday, March 15th, UCP of Georgia employee Kristina Diedrich received an alarming phone call —a fellow UCP of Georgia staffer Queen had experienced what appeared to be a stroke and needed to be transported to the ER as soon as possible. The paramedic who called Kristina stated that he had some other news as well — he told her that Sandra Houze, a UCP consumer, was the one who had called 911 to obtain assistance for her staff member Queen.

When paramedics arrived at Sandra's home, (where she lives alone with UCP caregivers providing support), Sandra explained that she called 911 when she saw her direct care staff, Queen, begin speaking abnormally and displaying a drastic change in facial expressions.

Queen did not want Sandra to call 911 because she thought she would be fine, but Sandra still called. Sandra told the paramedics they could not leave her alone and needed to call Kristina Diedrich, the residential director in Augusta. The paramedics called Kristina and asked her what to do with Sandra. Sandra accompanied Queen to the hospital.

When Kristina reached the hospital, Sandra was quietly sitting next to the paramedic, watching Queen receive treatment. Later that day, it was determined that Queen had experienced a severe stroke. She was put on a ventilator and thankfully her condition has since stabilized. Sandra Houze saved a life that Sunday morning, and has since touched all our hearts. For her heroic actions Sandra received a special certificate honoring her as a UCP Hero presented during a special reception in Augusta on April 3rd.
