NiCor Volunteer Day

NiCor Volunteers On May 19th, United Cerebral Palsy benefited from the labor and love of more than 85 NICOR employees and their family members who participated in the company’s 11th Annual Volunteer Day. In addition to creating a special garden for UCP’s Reed Street Center and completing a variety of interior and exterior projects at the Center and several of the group homes, NICOR Services employees conducted safety inspections and energy audits. NICOR presented UCP with a $7,200.00 grant to fund energy “make-overs” to create more energy efficient buildings.

Russ Strobel, Chairman, President, and CEO for NICOR, Inc. and NICOR Gas noted that, “Volunteer Day embodies the spirit of giving back to the communities we serve. Volunteerism is an integral part of NICOR’s corporate culture. Our employees are committed to doing their part in making our world a better place for everyone.”

NICOR staff visited UCP on several occasions, both before and after the volunteer day, interacting with our staff and clients, as well as learning about our programs and services. Their warmth and interest in our children and adults was evident to everyone.

Special thanks to Carmen Morales, Community Relations Director for NICOR Gas for her invaluable support and assistance with our application to be the spotlight agency for the 2007 Volunteer Day, as well as for the general coordination of the day’s activities. In addition, special thanks to Julian Brown of NICOR for his leadership and assistance with UCP’s application for the grant to fund the energy “make-overs”. Special mention goes to Pam Rose, Maria Nelson, and Ken Nance, who served as site coordinators at the Reed Street Center, Bridge Street House, and Glenwood Residence respectively. Finally, we again thank the many adults and children (including a NICOR employee/Scout Leader and his troop of BoyScouts) who made Saturday, May 19th another extra special day for United Cerebral Palsy and its’ ongoing mission to improve the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities.
