UCP/Detroit Honors Late Richard Beer
The recent passing of Richard L. Beer was sad news to us all. We, of course, will remember him fondly as a passionate Board Member and activist whose enthusiasm for education and knowledge knew no bounds. Our organization, and the community at large, will miss him.
Richard, a person with cerebral palsy, found many ways to affect his community. He was the director of the Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library, the recipient of several awards, including the Marion Gallagher Award from the American Association of Law Libraries and the Liberty Bell Award from the Oakland County Bar Association. Richard received a master’s degree in library science from Wayne State University.
To ensure Richard is remembered, not only by those still here, but those yet to come, United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit (UCP/Detroit) is establishing the Richard L. Beer Disability Knowledge Center, to be located in Southfield, Michigan.
The Richard L. Beer Disability Knowledge Center will support disability awareness programs and provide for resource materials, technology and training for people with disabilities, their families and friends to foster understanding, comfort and knowledge not only about Cerebral Palsy, but also any physical, mental or emotional limitation that society calls a “disability”.
Inaugural contributions to this fund are being sought in honor of this extraordinary community leader. This year, the fund will support facility renovations, the purchase of computers and assistive software and several books, videos and resources to foster disability awareness in our community. Each year, this fund will allow UCP/Detroit to update and increase the Center’s reach in the community. Many individuals with disabilities, their families and friends will benefit from this fund.
“This is such a fitting legacy, to teach others,” said Jean, Richard’s wife of 46 years.”
Would you please consider making a donation to the establishment of the Richard L. Beer Memorial Disability Knowledge Center? Donations should be made to United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit and are tax deductible.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and the people serviced by United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit, I’d like to thank you for considering this request. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (248) 557-5070.
Gratefully,
Mike Ward
Chairman
