The Gun Lake Adventure Series

  • When Johnnie Tuitel was growing up, he looked for books whose characters, like Johnnie, had cerebral palsy. In his search, he didn't find many positive role models.

As an adult, Johnnie started writing his own children's books about 11-year-old Johnnie Jacobson, who, like his creator, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. The books are part of The Gun Lake Adventure Series and for kids 8-12.

In the first book, The Barn at Gun Lake, Johnnie Jacobson describes his CP: " Our brain is like a computer. When I want to scratch my nose, for example, my brain sends a signal to my finger and tells it to scratch my nose. In my case, my personal brain computer became partly broken. The affected parts of my brain don't send the right signals to certain parts of my body, in my case my legs and part of my speech center."

Kids with cerebral palsy and kids without disabilities will enjoy Johnnie's honesty and openness about his disability. They will also enjoy Johnnie's ability to find ways to accommodate his disability and fully participate in the neighborhood activities. Most of all, kids will enjoy the mystery and adventure of the books.

Johnnie Tuitel and his co-author Sharon Lawson have created a wonderful series of books. Johnnie's dream is that all children with CP have access to these books so they can have a role model with CP.

UCP Michigan is helping with this goal. We are offering the six books of The Gun Lake Adventure Series (The Barn at Gun Lake, Mystery Explosion, Discovery on Blackbird Island, Searching the Noonday Trail, Adventure in the Beartooth Mountains, and The Light in Bradford Manor ) for $7 each. UCP Michigan will receive a portion of the proceeds from each book sold by us. To place an order, call us at (517)203-1200.
