UCP Summer Camps

UCP will host its first camp of the summer, Camp I Can "Outdoor Adventure," June 6-10 for children ages 5-10 with physical disabilities.

The second camp of the summer will be July 11-15 for children ages 5-10 with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Complete Registration Packet (deadline May 20).

The annual camp is located at the UCP Therapy Center and is offered daily, 9 a.m.-noon, for one week. Join us for an Outdoor Adventure staffed by teachers, a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, technology specialist, and caring volunteers. Camp I Can provides gross and fine motor activities, sensory opportunities, arts and crafts, music, computer activities, outside play and more!

Following the last day of each camp, parents and siblings are invited to join our campers and staff for a Family Campout!

Tuition is $200. Medicaid primary insurance payments accepted for tuition. Limited scholarship opportunities may be available and are based on need. Register your children early! Limited spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. Registration deadline is May 20.

"Paint the Streets" 5K & Carlene Hall Memorial Mile

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), along with the family and friends of the late Carlene Hall, present the second annual Paint the Streets 5k & Carlene Hall Memorial Mile on Saturday, July 23, at 7 a.m. to benefit spinal cord injury services at United Cerebral Palsy of Huntsville & Tennessee Valley, Inc. (UCP).

Registration

The race was created by the family and friends of Carlene Hall, an amazing woman who displayed uncommon faith and courage in the face of a debilitating spinal cord injury, to honor Carlene and enhance spinal cord injury services for others in our community.

Directed by the Team Rocket Tri Club, the 5k begins at 7 a.m. at SAIC and continues through Research Park. The CERTIFIED COURSE is FLAT and FAST with no appreciable hills. There are two aid stations that will have water and Gatorade (located at approximately miles 1 and 2). Water and Gatorade will also be available at the Start/Finish area along with post-race food. The 5k includes a Challenged Athlete Division.

The Carlene Hall Memorial Mile is a walk designed to provide a forum where everyone can participate.

Awards will be given to the overall winners, 1 deep, for Male/Female and Masters Male/Female, as well the top finishers in each age group.

This year we are offering a Team Competition. Each participant must register and enter their team name and the name of the team captain so we are sure who is on each team. Teams can be male, female, mixed and military and must consist of 3 to 5 people. The lowest 3 times will be added to determine rank. Prized will be given to the top three winners in each category.

Registration is being conducted through imAthlete. The cost structure is as follows:

Before April 1: $15 (5K), $10 (Walk)
April 2- July 22: $20 (5K), $15 (Walk)
July 23 (Race Day): $25 (5K), $20 (Walk)

T-shirts are guaranteed at packet pickup for anyone who has signed up prior to July 4. If T-shirts are not available for late registrants, they will be available for pickup at Fleet Feet several weeks after the race.

Registration on imAthlete ends on Wednesday, July 20. You WILL be able to register at packet pickup and race morning 5:30-6:30 AM. Cost during packet pickup and race morning is $25 for the 5k and $20 for the memorial walk.

Packet pickup will be located at Fleet Feet on Friday, July 22, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

ACJF Grant Awarded to UCP

Thanks to lawyers from across the state, UCP of Huntsville & Tennessee Valley, Inc. has received $3,000 from the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation (ACJF) to assist with programs and services for families affected by disabilities in North Alabama and statewide.

It is especially rewarding to offer funding that supports the outstanding work that is being done by UCP to help others. We recognize that the downturn in the nations economy has meant decreased resources for nonprofits while the need for their services has increased, ACJF President Rebekah McKinney said. We are pleased that our grants can offer some support during these difficult times.

On behalf of the clients and staff of UCP, we are greatly honored and most appreciative of this generous contribution from the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation, UCP Executive Director Cheryl Smith said. Our organizations programs and services have been seriously impacted recently by a struggling economy, reoccurring annual statewide proration, and state and federal program budget cuts. ACJF grant funding allows us the flexibility to maintain and restore these quality health and human services to UCP client families.

Founded in 1992, funds from the ACJF Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts program, as well as from donations, have allowed the Foundation to award nearly $9 million to nonprofit organizations statewide in ACJFs 18-year existence.

ACJFs grants are possible because of the generosity of Alabama lawyers who will work diligently for justice in the courtroom and their communities. ACJF is proud to represent the nearly 2,300 attorneys who support its efforts to demonstrate a genuine concern for the disadvantaged in the state and to assist in turning this concern to genuine help for those who need it the most.

Our grants truly have a statewide impact. We not only fund programs and services in local communities, but we also fund projects that have a statewide capacity, ACJF Executive Director Sue McInnish explained. Many of these organizations look to us for vitally important funding, which is why it is gratifying to know that we are able to fund large and small projects and touch so many lives in the process.

13th annual "An Irish Evening" March 11

UCP's 13th annual An Irish Evening event, presented by Redstone Federal Credit Union, was Friday, March 11, at the Jackson Conference Center in Research Park with WHNTs Jerry Hayes hosting the evening's festivities.

All proceeds from this annual fundraiser directly benefit UCP client services for more than 1,000 North Alabama families.

Social hour and silent auction began at 6 p.m., a buffet of Irish cuisine was served at 7 p.m., and live entertainment and games took place throughout the evening.

UCP was excited to welcome Huntsville's own Bourbon & Shamrocks to share live Irish folk music, as well as the talents of the Fitness Arts Center Irish step dancers. After the show, guests continued to dance the night away with dance tunes by Americas Party Pros. UCPs was also proud to welcome the Irish Society of North Alabama, who will host a variety of fun Irish games and activities from 6-9 p.m.

One of Huntsvilles best silent auctions once again took place, including vacation packages, fine dining, entertainment, jewelry, UCP client art and much more and for your bidding enjoyment.

Congratulations to our Pot of Gold Winners Mark Reed, who won a Kindle an XBox Kinect game system, and Andrea Bell, who won an iPad 2 (released the evening of the event)!
