Day Program staff and clients in Quaker Hill give back to the community.

During the dog days of summer, the Day Program staff and clients in Quaker Hill were busy staying cool by giving back.

UCP staff and clients were busy making hats for the newborns at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. One of UCP's long-term staff, Quesha, said that the Quaker Hill staff and clients have been doing this for as long as she can remember. Each week, the staff and clients make about 40 hats; some weeks they make as many as 100! If you know a baby that was born at L&M, chances are that baby received a hat that was lovingly made by our staff and clients in the Quaker Hill Day Program.

Christine C. (C.C) and a team of UCP clients visit the Women's Center of Southeastern CT to help them with some of their on-site needs. Meanwhile, staff and clients in the program make potpourri to donate to the Women's Center of Southeastern CT. Each bag of potpourri contains a scent that promotes relaxation and contains a message of inspriational hope. We've been told taht some of the women take the potpourri with them to therapy sessions to help them relax.
Playing with the Fish...

For the May Support Group, the gang plus newcomer, Shannan Farr (The Disability Support Coordinator), took a dive under the ocean to Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT. They encountered a group of dolphins playing in the pool. Next on the adventure was stingrays where William, Shannan and Craig got a chance to feed and touch the creatures of the deep.

Next, the group took a self-guided tour through one of the aquarium's inside exhibits. There were frogs, sharks, and a lot of fish! The penguin feeding show came next, followed by a quick sea lion viewing. For the final big adventure, the undersea treasure hunters, went to a sea lion show where they were dazzled with spectacular sea lion stunts.
After all this the gang of land lovers sat and discussed what to do about the next meeting. It was a great day!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

On Sunday, August 23, 2009, the UCP Support Group went to Dodd Stadium for a good, old fashioned American baseball game where the Connecticut Defenders took on the Binghamton Mets. The game was a little slow but quickly picked up momentum in the 9th inning where the Defenders got 3 extra runs to make the final score 7 to 6. The Defenders won.

Contribution by Michael Langley, UCP of Eastern CT Volunteer.
