UCP Awarded HUD Housing Grant

In November, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) gave Delaware's community a new opportunity accessible and affordable housing.

United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware, Inc. (UCP) and Independent Resources Inc. (IRI) will soon be building new accessible and affordable apartments in the City of Wilmington for people with physical disabilities. Because of a federal grant submitted last May, the two agencies have received official notice from HUD (Housing and Urban Development) that they will receive a grant of $789,900 for construction. The apartment building will be called Garrett House Apartments, and is located at 609 Washington Street in the Quaker Hill section of the city. UCP and IRI have been working with the Wilmington Office of Real Estate and Housing to secure a site, which has ample room for building and for parking.

The Garrett House is an historical building that was the home of the son of Thomas Garrett, who was an important figure in the underground railroad in Delaware before the Civil War. UCP and IRI will renovate the building which will have five one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom apartments. The building will be three stories high and will have an elevator. Both agencies are also working closely with the Quaker Hill Historical Preservation Society. This is the first HUD grant that UCP and IRI have received. It marks a new beginning for both agencies to build affordable, accessible housing for people with disabilities.
