Assistive Technology Team

UCP of Mobile uses teamwork to provide comprehensive assistive technology evaluations. The team works together to evaluate the specific needs of individuals with disabilities, allowing them to find the most appropriate technology for each person. The evaluations can benefit anyone who has challenges in communication, mobility, body positioning, or activities of daily living.

Technology or intervention may be recommended in the following areas:

  • Communication:
    • Augmentative Communication Devices (high and low technology)
    • Object/ Picture/ Word Boards
    • Sign Language
    • Communication building devices
  • Positioning/Mobility:
    • Positioning for head, back, trunk, pelvis, arms, and legs to improve use of communication devices
    • Mobility devices ranging from canes to power wheelchairs
  • Adaptive Equipment for:
    • Environmental control
    • Activities of daily living
    • Communication
    • Play

The evaluations include the evaluation session(s), a written report, recommendations for equipment and/ or augmentative communication devices, and a follow-up consultation. They can take place in a number of settings including: UCP’s Mobile office, the offices of other agencies, homes, and schools.

Our highly qualified team consists of experienced therapists who are dedicated to advancing the independence of people with disabilities. A Speech/Language Pathologist assesses the communication needs of people who have difficulty using spoken language to convey their wants and needs. A Physical Therapist addresses wheelchair seating and positioning needs to promote optimum use of technology. An Occupational Therapist evaluates a person’s needs and abilities as they relate to assistive devices, which may increase the individual’s independence.
