History

UCP of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties was founded in 1944 by a small group of parents who wanted to create community-based services for their children with disabilities, during a time when no such services existed. Initially founded as the Spastic Children’s Foundation, UCP’s earliest consumers were mostly families with young children. Over time, those youngsters grew up, and many of them still live with us today. Although we still offer services to children on a limited basis, beginning during the 1980’s, restrictions on government funding for children’s programs prompted UCP to shift its focus to adults. Today UCP operates over 40 program sites throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Through the generosity of our community supporters, the commitment of a dedicated staff, and the courage and vision of our founders, UCP today provides services to 800 children and adults with developmental disabilities daily.
