Charitable Gifts & Planned Giving
There are many ways you can make a gift to UCP of Central Maryland (UCP-CM). Whether large or small, each gift is acknowledged and appreciated.
UCP-CM’s specific giving opportunities include support of annual and capital campaigns as well as tribute gifts and planned and estate giving. Naming and recognition opportunities are also available when appropriate. Giving options include cash gifts, pledges, vehicle donations, matching gifts and in-kind donations. Gifts of stock and property are also acceptable. All gifts made in support of UCP-CM are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Annual Fund Gifts Yearly cash gifts made to UCP’s annual fund are a popular way to help support the operations of our quality programs and services.
The Independence Society was created to honor our generous individual, corporation, and foundation benefactors who provide annual funding of $1,000 or more to advance the independence of individuals with disabilities. This premiere recognition club is comprised of a core group who share the belief that individuals with disabilities deserve quality and comprehensive services that empower them to be as independent as possible. All charitable gifts count toward membership in the below societies and may be a single gift or the sum of several gifts throughout the fiscal year. The fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.
You can become a member of the Independence Society on several different levels:

Tribute Gifts A tribute gift to UCP is a thoughtful way of expression that enriches the lives of children and adults with disabilities. These contributions can be made in honor of a friend or family member as a birthday, anniversary, holiday or special occasion gift, or by designating UCP as a beneficiary in lieu of flowers in memory of a loved one who has passed away. A tribute gift ensures UCP’s efforts in advancing the independence of people with disabilities while honoring the recipient.

Planned Gifts and Estate Planning By remembering UCP-CM in your estate plans or through a deferred or planned gift, you can help future generations of people with disabilities live independently to the fullest of their abilities. Donations can take many forms including bequests, gifts of real estate, gifts of life insurance or gifts of securities. Because there are many types of planned and deferred gift options, UCP suggests talking to an attorney or financial advisor about what gift fits your wishes and needs.
There are three types of bequests that can be written in your will. These include:
- Specific Bequest– A specific dollar amount, percentage of estate, or property can be designated in your will to go to UCP.
Example: "I bequeath Twenty Thousand ($20,000) Dollars [or: all my General Moters stock] to United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland, a Maryland non-profit organization located in Baltimore, Md."
- Residual Bequest– After the estate has paid all expenses, debts and taxes and honored all specific bequests, the remaining amount would be transferred to UCP.
Example: "I bequeath Ten Percent (10%) of the residue of my estate to United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland, a Maryland non-profit organization located in Baltimore, Md."
- Contingent Bequest – Under certain circumstances, UCP would receive all or a portion of your estate.
Example: "If my nephew does not survive me or is unable to inherit this bequest, I direct that it be paid to United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland, a non-profit organization located in Baltimore, Md."
The following types of gifts can also be made. Please talk to your attorney or financial advisor to determine if any of the gifts fits your wishes and your needs.
- Charitable gift annuity – enables you to transfer cash or marketable sercurities to UCP in exchange for a current income tax deduction and UCP’s promise to make fixed annual payments to you during your lifetime or a designated other. The amount that is received is determined by many factors including age of donor, age of beneficiaries, and size of the gift.
- Pooled income fund – UCP receives a gift from you in money or securities which are invested together with similar gifts from other donors. The donor will continue to receive a proportionate share from the income for the rest of the donor’s life.
- Charitable remainder trust – UCP receives cash, securities or other property from the donor. In return, UCP returns a percentage of income based on the gift value.
- Charitable remainder annuity trust – is a popular type of life-income plan where a donor’s gift is transferred into a trust. The trustee manages the trust assets and pays the donor a fixed income for life or for a term of years. When the trust terminates, the remaining assets are transferred to UCP.
- Revocable trust – This option is for donors who want to be flexible, to give a gift with a variety of assets, and to have the option to take back the gift. This gift would give UCP money after it has provided income to the donor or designated loved one for life.
- Gifts of Insurance – If an existing insurance policy is no longer needed, you can assign UCP as the beneficiary.
