History

United Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Missouri (UCP) was established in 1967 by a group of concerned community members with a desire to help children with developmental disabilities. The organization’s start was small, offering a program for children three days a week out of the basement of a local church. Throughout the 1970’s children’s services evolved into a full-time program providing a variety of early intervention services. During the 1980’s the organization expanded to serve adults with developmental disabilities through the addition of programs promoting personal growth, community involvement, employment, and advocacy. In 1983 UCP was accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, and maintains that accreditation today.

UCP of Northwest Missouri faithfully carries out its mission to "positively affect the quality of life for persons with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities through the provision of direct services, community education and advocacy." UCP employs 48 staff who provides services to over 400 children and adults with disabilities each year, living in St. Joseph and the surrounding counties of Northwest Missouri.
